     OUR LOCAL HERITAGE
     http://www.alle-kiskitoday.com/articles/archives/8

What Were Blockhouses Anyway? A blockhouse as found in the
Kiski Valley and the American frontier in the late 1700s was
basically a solid log cabin with no windows as such and a
solid wood door. Sometimes the walls of the cabin were double
stacked with logs, giving a two-layered barrier against
bullets. Small openings were usually placed around the top of
the blockhouse, just beneath the roof, to provide for air and
for a place from which to shoot. A well-built blockhouse could
keep settlers safe and able to withstand 2 or 3 times the
number of attackers. Read more interesting history at Our
Local Heritage at above site. Click on “Archives” for a list
