Veterans of Freedom: Salute to a Hero
http://www.alle-kiskitoday.com/articles/1765
Sergeant Lonny Wells was a man who always put the lives of
others before his own. As a Marine combat instructor, Lonny
was informed that his squad was being deployed to Iraq, but
that his commander wanted him to stay at Camp Lejeune to
continue training new men. Lonny, however, insisted on going
with his squad, saying, I have to watch over them. These are
my kids.
Larry Barkowski and the Lady Spartans: Looking for Another
Taste
http://www.alle-kiskitoday.com/articles/1808
"Our underclassmen responded in a very positive manner. A
couple of our key players recommitted themselves to extra
effort, so during the summer they worked on their game
"
Barkowski says of St. Joseph's team. "They sort of said 'We
want to taste this again.'" Read the entire interview with
Coach Barkowski and watch the video.

INTERNET NEWS
NEGROPONTE TOUTS $100 LAPTOP
MIT Media Lab chief Nicholas Negroponte was prowling the
halls of last week's World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, showing off his latest inspiration -- a mock-up
of a $100 laptop computer. Negroponte's device, which runs on
free Linux software, derives much of its affordability
through an innovative idea for lowering the cost of its
display to a reasonable $25 or less. The tent like pop-up
display uses technology now found in rear-projection
televisions in conjunction with an LED light source.
Negroponte says he's already received initial backing from
Advanced Micro Devices and is in discussions with Google,
Motorola, News Corp. and Samsung for support. Meanwhile,
Advanced Micro CEO Hector de J. Ruiz brought his own low-cost
concept computer to the meeting -- the $185 Personal Internet
Communicator, which features a stripped down version of
Windows and comes sans monitor or fan. Both men see the low-
cost computer as the answer to developing countries'
increasing demand for technology, and Negroponte says he's
confident his laptop could find a ready market as early as
2006. "China is important because there are 220 million
students," he notes. (New York Times 31 Jan 2005)

OUR LOCAL HERITAGE
http://www.alle-kiskitoday.com/articles/archives/8
DID YOU KNOW: George Washington mentioned the Kiskiminetas
River in some of his papers that have survived to today? This
strengthens the possibility that he may have passed through
this valley as a young military scout in the late 1740s. Read
more interesting history at Our Local Heritage at above site.

TODAYS FEATURED WEB SITES
Extreme Oil
http://www.pbs.org/wnet/extremeoil/
Fifteen years after the end of the Cold War and in the wake
of two wars in the Gulf and Iraq, all the world's easy oil
has been found. Today, the oil industry has to go to extremes
to find new sources of the asset that drives the world's
economy and fuels so many aspects of modern life. This PBS
site crisscrosses the globe like the transcontinental
pipelines themselves, exposing a wide range of issues -- and
meeting people who wrestle with the dilemmas of how to ensure
the supply we need, at a price we will tolerate
J-Pass Satellite Passes
http://science.nasa.gov/Realtime/JPass/
Only a few satellites are visible with the naked eye or even
aided with binoculars. But once you see a satellite pass at
night, you might think it was a UFO or meteor (falling star).
This NASA site developed and offers J-Pass to help you view
some of the most visible satellite passes.
