     Nigerian scams and beyond
You’d have thought the old Nigerian bank scam would be so well
known that it’s pointless, but people are still being suckered
in. In case you’ve just returned from Mars here’s the basic
scam: You get an email from someone claiming they have access
to a large sum of money (usually in the millions) but need
overseas help to access it. You are asked to assist in
exchange for a percentage of the money. If you’re silly enough
to reply you’ll be told that some money is needed to pay
various costs, but if you pay up then the requests for more
funds are sure to follow. At the extreme, people fly to
Nigeria and get caught up with some very nasty people –
physical violence can be your ultimate reward. In recent times
the scam has been picked up in other countries with messages
appearing to come from places as far away as Burma. The story
varies and sometimes includes the names of real, but now
     deceased, people. See http://www.419legal.org/pages.php?p=12
for more information. The most recent variation takes
advantage of the widespread knowledge of the 419 scam. Now you
can get emails saying that money is held in your name in a
Nigerian bank but will be taken by the government. The story
is different but the scam is the same – you’d be asked to pay
fees in exchange for payment of ‘your’ money. There's plenty
of other variations, as I type this a 'Cry for Help' message
from an Englishman in Dubai has arrived. He's ill and want
money distributed to charities via you. All the buttons are
pushed - cancer, car accident, widower, orphans, God - you
name it. But it's just a variation on the Nigerian scam and
isn't even worth space in your Deleted Items folder.

Freeport, Luther, and Blue Slate (Part 2)
Years later, the meeting place of these faithful pioneers was
known up and down the river valleys as the "Blue Slate" or
"Dutch Protestant" Church. The Blue Slate name was no
derogatory term. Apparently, in a small creek near the church,
a ream of blue slate snaked through the creek bed. But the
name stuck, and by 1825, the fruit of those believers Pastor
Steck initially called together were known, at least in a
legal document of the day, as "the Blue Slate congregation".
Reverend Steck probably continued as Pastor for the Lutherans
until 1813 or 1817, making his travels from Greensburg as
often as he could. The Germans Are Coming: A German preacher
of the Gospel began preaching to settlers in the area whose
faith in Christ in their homelands had been German Reformed.
Philip Muckenhaupt began planting and harvesting the seeds of
faith around 1802. The seeds must have grown. A German
Reformed body of believers also began meeting on the same site
as the Blue Slate Church group just before 1807. Henry Bash,
probably one of the German Reformed Christians, in 1806
harvested and milled the logs that would make up the meeting
place. It looks like both groups of believers--the Lutherans
and the German Reformed churches--both owned and used the site
and meetinghouse together. Both groups would work together at
least through 1834, when they once again build another log
meetinghouse for the churches. Both groups would serve as a
foundation for a church that still lives today in Freeport as
a testimony to the faith in Christ of a few early settlers:
Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Read more interesting
