INTERNET NEWS
LET YOUR FINGERS DO THE TALKING
Fingerprint technology appears to be the biometric
identification method of choice, surpassing competing systems
such as retina scanning, handprint geometry and facial
recognition. "Fingerprints will be dominant for the
foreseeable future," says Don McKeon, product manager for
biometric security at IBM. One reason for its popularity is
falling prices for fingerprint readers: Microsoft recently
introduced a stand-alone model for $54 and earlier this year
American Power Conversion rolled out a model for PCs priced
at $45. Meanwhile, IBM said last week it would begin selling
laptops with built-in fingerprint readers and Microsoft is
marketing a fingerprint reader-keyboard and -mouse.
International Biometric Group predicts sales of fingerprint
readers will rise 86% to $368 million this year, up from $198
million last year, spurred by user rebellion against the
myriad passwords computer users must now memorize. "Our
parents didn't deal with the problem of remembering 20
passwords, and our grandkids won't even know what they are,"
predicts McKeon.

OUR LOCAL HERITAGE

Freeport, Luther, and Blue Slate (Part 1)
It was the turn of the 18th century, and the dawn of the
1800s, in the area that would be known as Freeport one day. It
was a hostile land with few amenities. One could go for miles
and not meet another person. And those you met were likely not
to have anything in common with you. It was a strange land.
There were settlers spread out in the Allegheny-Kiski-Buffalo
river valley who had brought their beliefs with them from
their homelands. These pioneers, largely Dutch or German, held
in common a belief about Jesus and His Church that had been
defended by a pioneer of faith hundreds of years before. The
settlers and their forefathers had taken Martin Luther's name
to describe how they worshipped the Lord--the name of
Lutheran. It was one of the first recorded instances of these
men and women at the edge of civilization meeting together to
honor the Lord in the wilderness. Pastor John Michael Steck
journeyed from Greensburg-most certainly a perilous voyage of
a few days--to call together these Lutheran believers. They
assembled on a hill that looked out over what is today the
town of Boggsville. They met in the Iseman home, in the
neighborhood of grounds that were located about 1.5 miles west
of Slate Lick, near the crest of Buffalo Creek hill. (Part 2
tomorrow.) Read more interesting history at Our Local Heritage
