     John  Armstrong's 1756 ambush on Kittanning wasn't going well;
     the Indian men repelled the attackers from the safety of their
     homes.  Hoping  to  turn  the tide of the  futile  attack,  he
     commanded  the Indian town to be torched, driving  the  entire
     force massed inside to flee and face capture or death. The few
     survivors  to  escape carried news of the surprise  strike  to
     other  tribes, discouraging them to never commit large  forces
     to war parties, effectively diluting their power in this area.
