BUG IRON: Many steel mills in the Alle-Kiski Valley for over a
century have sent steel products all over the world. AK Valley
resident historian Ken Blose relates one such instance from
the 1930s: Almost everyone has heard of wrought iron or pig
iron, but who has ever heard of bug iron? If you had been an
employee of the American Sheet and Tin Plate Company of
Vandergrift in 1932, you would be aware of bug iron. This info
from a November 14, 1932 Vandergrift News: "The company
recently completed a large order of "bug iron" for use in the
Argentine district of South America. "Bug iron", as it is
familiarly know to the mill workmen, is finished sheet-iron,
cut in strips 18 inches wide and five feet long, with two
slotted holes in each end. These sheets are used for erecting
"bug fences" in the countries in which they go, to combat
grasshoppers, locusts and other insect pests, which sweep that
territory from time to time. First, a ditch many miles long
in length is dug in the district to be protected. Short iron
posts are placed very five feet along the side of the ditch.
The posts are fitted with projection on which the "bug iron"
sheets are hung, making a continuous sheet-iron fence, 18
inches high, with a smooth surface along one side of the
ditch. When hordes of locusts or other insect pests invade a
territory, the "bug fences" are erected. The insects move
forward like an army, topple into the ditch and are unable to
climb up the smooth surface of the "bug fence". When the
insect storm has subsided, the pests in the ditches are
killed, their bodies crushed and a valuable oil is extracted
from them. The remainder is used for fertilizer. In the past
ten years, the Vandergrift mills have filled orders for "bug
iron" amounting to several million dollars. Nearly all of it
goes to South America." Read more interesting history at Our
