     COOL SITES FOR TODAY

Epicurious: The World's Greatest Recipe Collection
     http://eat.epicurious.com/

This collection of culinary delights contains an archive of
over 16,000 recipes. The database may be searched through
the use of keywords, or through a number of more elaborate
specifications, such as looking for recipes that are kid-
friendly, low fat, or meatless. Visitors can create their
own customized online recipe box, view a list of the most
popular recipes (as noted by visitors to the site), and look
through a list of the newest recipes added to the site.
Perhaps one of the most helpful parts of the site is a
collection of technique videos provided for the novice cook.
Here visitors can view demonstration videos of such
important culinary skills as how to poach eggs properly, how
to baste a turkey, and how to boil a lobster. Overall, this
site is a good resource for both experienced and beginning
cooks looking for both new and traditional recipes.

     Reconstruction: The Second Civil War
     http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/reconstruction/

This website explores many of the complex themes of this
period. The materials on the site are divided into ten
thematic areas, each concerned with compelling topics that
include explorations of the lives of Southern women, the
transformation of former slaves into sharecroppers, and the
emergence of the Ku Klux Klan. Each one of these self-
contained sections features a mini-documentary for viewer
consideration, a selection of primary sources (such as eye-
witness testimonies and legislative documents), and question
and answer sessions with prominent historians about each
respective topic. Along with a number of resources for
teachers, the site also contains an interactive map of the
United States in 1870, from which visitors can learn how
each state was affected by both the effects of the Civil War
     and Reconstruction.

     Mensa Workout
     http://www.mensa.org/workout.html

This quiz is provided for entertainment purposes only; it is
not an IQ test. This score will not qualify you for Mensa.
The questions on the "Mensa Workout" are biased towards
people whose primary language is English. You have half an
hour to answer 30 questions. Answers to the questions and
discussion of the answers are provided at the time you
submit your answers. While there is a 30-minute time limit
to take the test, the amount of time you actually take in no
     way affects your final score.
