OUR LOCAL HERITAGE
www.alle-kiskitoday.com
FLOAT FACTS: Just a few facts about the PA Canal that went
down the Kiski River and through the Allegheny Valley: The
water was little more than 4 foot deep. The locks, which
raised and lowered the water along with the canal boats, were
only 15 feet wide and 90 feet long. And the canal at the top
surface of the water was only 40 feet wide. The sides sloped
down, and the bottom was only 28 feet wide. Read more
interesting history at Our Local Heritage online.

COOL SITES FOR TODAY
USDA/FDA Foodborne Illness Education Information Center
http://www.nal.usda.gov/foodborne/
Recently, there has been a great deal of concern over food
borne illnesses, particularly concerning the safety of various
food products and the proper handling of certain foodstuffs
that are prone to transmitting bacteria. Designed by the USDA
and the FDA, this site serves as a fine clearinghouse for the
general public and persons working in the field of public
health. Included within the site is Food safe, a discussion
group where individuals can network with food safety
specialists from all over the world and get answers to
difficult food safety questions. A nice section dedicated to
other sites dealing with food safety includes several dozen
links that address such important issues as children and food
safety and food allergies. Finally, visitors can also read a
number of food safety education success stories submitted from
different parts of the United States.
Alzheimer's Association: Diversity Toolbox
http://www.alz.org/ResourceCenter/Diversity/overview.htm
Alzheimers disease and other disorders that cause dementia
know no boundaries. Many individuals and families in ethnic
and cultural minority groups in the United States encounter
obstacles that limit information, care, and health resources.
Also, many medical and care services are not designed to meet
needs in diverse communities. The Diversity Toolbox is a
resource for people with dementia, family and friends, and
health and social service professionals.
NPR: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)
http://www.npr.org/news/specials/sars/
NPR presents a five-part series on the world after SARS,
examining such issues as the science behind detecting and
treating the disease, to the response by health care workers
on the front lines.
