TECH SUPPORT AND EDUCATION
Q. How can I export my Internet Explorer Favorites (bookmarks)
from my home computer to my computer at work?
A. You can export your Favorites list as an HTML file, copy it
to your second computer, and then import the file into
Internet Explorer or open the file in another browser. To
import the file in IE 5, pull down the File menu and choose
"Import and Export", step through the wizard and select the
Favorites file you want to import and the file you want to
export it to. [Source: PC Magazine]

INTERNET NEWS
YAHOO TO CHARGE FOR E-MAIL, STORAGE
Yahoo said Thursday that it will soon implement new fees in
once-free areas on its service, marking the Web portal's
latest effort to boost non-advertising revenue. The company
said it will begin charging for a feature that lets people
check their Yahoo e-mail messages from outside services. In
addition, the company will limit public access to its data
storage service in hopes of persuading people to pay for it.
CIA GETS CAUGHT WITH HAND IN COOKIE JAR
The CIA got caught with a hand in the Internet cookie jar.
The agency removed software from one of its Web sites this
week after a private group discovered that the CIA was using
banned Internet tracking technology called "cookies," said
Mike Stepp, who manages the CIA's public Web site. "It was a
mistake on our part. It was not intentional," Stepp said
Tuesday. "The public does not need to be concerned that the
CIA is tracking them. We're a bit busy to be doing that."
Cookies are small software files often placed on computers
without a person's knowledge. The files can make Internet
browsing more convenient by letting sites distinguish user
preferences, but they have been criticized for violating
privacy because they can track Web surfing. The government
issued strict rules for how federal agencies may use cookies
in 2000 after it was discovered that the White House drug
policy office had used the technology to track computer
users viewing its online anti-drug advertising. The rules
ban the use of "persistent" cookies, which track Web habits
over years.
