                         ____HISTORY SHORT____
                                   
                                   
     An  early Kiski Valley woman, Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Cochran,
     earned  her  famous  pen  name and her  first  distinction  as  a
     reporter  for  the  Pittsburgh  Dispatch.   In  a  business  that
     admitted  few women, she next took on Joseph Pulitzer’s New  York
     World  and  become known as her fearlessness.  Her  first  story,
     written  after  becoming an inmate for 10 days at the  asylum  on
     Blackwell’s Island, secured her fame and brought about changes in
     the  treatment of the insane.  It also set a pattern for her life
     and career.
