       Fort Hand was built in Washington Twp. in 1777 because of
     frequent Indian attacks.  It was named after the general who
    brought an expedition from Fort Pitt to build it.  The fort no
           longer stands but a marker now sits on the site.

                         ____HISTORY SHORT____
                                   


     Between  1845  and 1854 the Saltsburg Canal  was  replaced  by
     railroad for transportation. A bridge spanned the Kiskiminetas
     River and a passenger and freight station was located there by
     the  Northwestern PA Railroad Company.  The  piers  are  still
