____HISTORY SHORT____
Famous Travelers
By 1829 canal boats were traveling up the Kiskiminetas River to
points east. Soon afterwards, the main line canal to the valley
became operational and prospered as more travelers, farmers, and
industries used it.
Passengers traveled on fast Packet canal boats which could make
80 to 100 miles per day. Charles Dickens, the English author
came this way as did the writer Harriet Beecher Stowe and the
politician Henry Clay. The bodies of two presidents, William
Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor, passed by on the way to their
final resting places.

LETTER REQUESTING INFORMATION
My mother was born in Hyde Park. I have a picture of the house
from way back in 1905. I took the picture to the museum and
there was a man there that knew where the house was and that it
was still standing. Its on Chestnut Street. My mothers name
was Evelyn Elizabeth Roberts. She Married Samual Paul Kinter.
He was from Indiana PA. Mom had a good friend from Hyde Park by
the Name of Sally Davis and she was blind. Does anyone know of
these people? Thanks, AJ McMunn
