     Windows 95 Emergency Recovery

If you use Windows 95 look for a Microsoft utility, on your
original Win 95 CD, called ERU.exe - the Emergency Recovery
     Utility. Look for the folder:

     d:\other\misc\eru

(where 'd:' is the letter of your CD drive) and copy that
folder to your hard drive. No particular installation is
needed. The associated text file explains how ERU.exe can be
used to back up, and in troubled times, revert to a
previously backed up instance of your key configuration files
     (the registry and so on).

The Emergency Recovery Utility was dropped from Windows 98
but the files from Windows 95 still work with Windows 98.

A tip: Don't accept the default and try to back up to a
floppy disk - the disk probably won't be big enough. Just
select the hard drive back up alternative and back up to
C:\ERD. Why is this default not C:\ERU? Ask the not-so-
     logical programmers.

     AOL’S INSTANT MESSENGER VULNERABLE
eWeek is reporting that Version 4.7.2480 of AOL's popular
Instant Messenger client software has a security hole that
leaves the client PC vulnerable to attack. According to
eWeek, "When an attacker sends a specially crafted message
to another user, the message can overrun the buffer space
that is allotted for such requests and allow the attacker to
execute whatever code he chooses to embed in the message."

     TROUBLE FOR MICROSOFT
Microsoft's legal troubles looked as if they were about to
come to an end last fall, but with more than half a dozen
states refusing to go along with the proposed resolution of
the vast anti-trust case, it's beginning to look like 2002
will, in some ways, look a lot like 2001 for the software
     giant. [Source: PC Magazine]

HARVARD E-MAILS REJECTED AS SPAM BY AOL
Dozens of Harvard University applicants didn’t get admissions
notices by e-mail last month, because America Online
computers read the messages as spam and kicked them back to
the school. Harvard sent the e-mail notices to about 6,000
applicants seeking early admission, explaining whether they
had been admitted, rejected or deferred. AOL flagged between
75 and 100 of the messages as e-mail “spam” and bounced them
back to the college. An AOL spokesman said he’s not sure why.
Harvard said it would post a message on its Web site telling
applicants to make sure their e-mail provider allows messages
     from the school. [Source: AP]
