Hunting for resident waterfowl will be permitted at Westmoreland County’s Chestnut Ridge Park, Bridgeport Dam Park and designated hunting areas at all the County Parks during all season dates as approved by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Westmoreland Counties Mammoth Park, Twin Lakes Park, and Northmoreland Park will allow migratory waterfowl hunting in designated hunting areas utilizing restricted dates and times. All Federal Law, Parks Regulations, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission Rules and Regulations will be followed.

Local News : Matthew Zidek Receives Academic Honor
St. Joseph High School Alum (‘02) Matthew Zidek recently received the Eric A. and Josephine S. Walker Award, the highest academic award in the Penn State School System. The Vandergrift native and member of St. James the Greater Parish in Apollo had been a member of the Dean's List at Penn State for four semesters, including a 4.0 GPA last fall, and a recipient of the Joyce Rivas Alumni Volunteer Scholarship, a University wide scholarship that is offered each year to only two students in the entire 24-campus Penn State system.
Local News : Fire Destroys Three Homes
A fire started around 3:00 a.m., Saturday June 16, 2007 in the home of John and Rebecca Zahumensky at 143 Hamilton Avenue in Vandergrift. Before it was over, three homes were destroyed and houses on either side of the three destroyed homes were scorched and had siding melt. As of Saturday afternoon there were still some hot spots being put out.

Local News : Local married couple deployed to Iraq
A Vandergrift married couple, Chad H. and Stacie L. Hepler, have been deployed to Iraq this January. Both graduates of Kiski Area High School, they were married in January of 2000. They have two children, one two years and the other one year old. Their tour of service started in August 2006 and they will be stationed in Iraq until September of this year.

The child dropped a toy down a heating duct and decided to go in after it feet first. Unfortunately, he had no way to crawl back out and his parents could not reach him. An extraction would be necessary, and complicating it was the fact that the heating duct was built inside an old, pre-existing chimney. The rescue team used the new saw they purchased with the Fireman's Fund Heritage grant to cut through thick plaster, brick, and the metal duct.

UPMC Health Plan has given a $50,000 grant to three agencies that are working on an Armstrong County-wide approach to child health and wellness. The bulk of the $50,000 grant will go toward offering after-school and weekend health activities that could benefit more than 3,200 Armstrong School District elementary students and their families.
