She has had her hands full, coaching 24 varsity cheerleaders at Plum while overseeing the other 30 girls on the JV and junior high squads. But Jessica Boynton, head cheerleading coach for the Mustangs, has remained focused on her goal of building a strong program. "I'm only in the second year, [still] working out the kinks, finding out what works and what doesn't," she says. "I want them to be able to believe in themselves, and carry confidence they gain in cheerleading into everyday life."

Lucy Kaczanowicz is in her inaugural year as head high school cheerleading coach at Burrell but she's not new to the school nor to cheerleading. The New Ken native has been an assistant coach for the Bucs' cheerleading squads for the past 6 years. This year she is responsible for 39 cheerleaders, 16 of them varsity--and one Buccaneer mascot.

"I'm just a mom that believes in the youth of our society… [they] need somebody to give them confidence in themselves," says Robin Coleman, Apollo-Ridge's head cheerleading coach. Even though she is in her first year at Apollo, she coached four years in the midget football program at Saltsburg, and cheered two years herself for the Indiana Indians in high school.

I'm sure most of us have seen the group of elegant women donned in red and purple visiting local establishments and wondered what was behind their wonderful attire. These would be members of the Red Hat Society. Recently, the Alle-Kiski Chapter of the Red Hat Society organized a picnic at Northmoreland Park to include all local chapters of the society. This was the largest gathering in a single function that has ever taken place. Those in attendance represented eleven local chapters. What a colorful site with 115 women over age 50 dressed in purple tee shirts and red hats, which is mandatory attire at gatherings.

The Fort Hand Festival at Kunkle Park is scheduled for September 13th, 2003, from 8am to dusk. The events that are planned for the festival includes polka dancing and performances form the Ray Skovensi Orchestra, the Jim Rhoades Band ant the Barn Hill Country Band. There will also be plenty of children's activities. These include a moonwalk, crafts, face painting, pony rides, puppet show, and a magic show along with a kickball tournament between Mamont, Washington and North Washington Elementary Schools. There will also be a nice variety of delicious foods and crafts.

More than 100 high school students and their families attended the Spend an Evening program at Penn State New Kensington earlier this month. This event was the third in a series of summer programs geared to the prospective freshmen class of 2004. The 115 people for the August evening program more than doubled the combined attendance of Spend a Day in June, which was thirty-four and Spend a Saturday in July, which was sixty-seven.

Local News : August Named Native American Awareness Month in Pennsylvania
August will be celebrated as Native American Awareness Month in Pennsylvania for the third time in three years. This spring the state General Assembly passed House Resolution No. 293, an effort led by Rep. Dave Reed - R, PA Dist. 62, honoring Thunder Mountain Lenape Nation's activities throughout the state. The resolution was co-sponsored by Sandra Major - R, PA Dist. who sponsored a similar resolution passed in 2001 and 2002.

The laughter of children announced the beginning of another day at the Kids. Community Bible Club in Oklahoma Park. This week long event has drawn area children with an average of thirty in attendance each day. Six youth helpers assisted the teachers, Lara Laero, Zoeanna Shorthouse and Marilyn Henley, as they played games with the children, did a craft, and enjoyed a Bible story presented by Biblical Characters from the Christian Performing Arts Company (CPAC). There were also great refreshments and prizes given out.

Yesterday the "Gromley Concrete" Alle-Kiski Relay For Life team took a spot outside of the Fashion Bug store in Lower Burrell to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The goodies on sale consisted of hotdogs, chips, raffle tickets and a large variety of baked goods. Other teams will be taking turns today and Saturday until 7pm.

Although they are very visible, they remain almost invisible to the public. Local News : Better Equipped To Save Lives
Recently the Vandergrift #1 Fire Department successfully completed a two-year venture to research and find a way to purchase new air pack units. They were able to purchase 16 new air packs, 32 cylinders, and two Rapid Intervention Packs (RIT) units. The units are used in the instance of a firefighter being trapped in a burning building. The packs have a portable air cylinder with connections and a hose to reach the trapped individual and feed them fresh air through the faceplate.

By 9:30 am the rain had stopped but the fishermen had gathered a great momentum. By 2:00 pm, it is estimated, that several hundred fish had been caught with 129 turned in to the judges to measure. The event, sponsored by the StrongLand Chamber of Commerce and its members, not only stalked the lake with large trout, but also gave trophies and cash prizes to those who entered and won the hourly competitions.
