The sewage replacement project has finally begun in Hyde Park. Employees from Donegal Construction have begun digging trenches along Railroad Street and First Avenue in Hyde Park. The construction work will run to Elm Street. This is only phase one in a five-phase project to replace the sewage pipes in Hyde Park.
Local News : Emergency Service Consolidation Moves Ahead
Although emergency workers may not be getting the money they hoped to do a feasibility study on consolidation plans, Chief Lyle Rusz of the Apollo Hose #3 is still hopeful. They recently had another meeting to discuss the possibility of the Apollo #2 Fire Department, Apollo #3 Fire Department, North Apollo Fire Department and the Kiski Valley Special Services consolidating. It was then that they found out that the financial support that they had hoped to get from John Murtha might not come through.

And the reputation of the young adults serving in the Burrell Interact Club has brought praise from many community and business members. Megan Nese, a teacher at the Burrell High School, is currently overseeing the volunteer program. It has been passed down through the years and the honor now rests on her shoulders.

The Washington/Bell Lions Club is currently looking for young volunteers to join a new Leo's Club. The club is for children and young adults ages 12-21 and has the same principals as the Lions Club. They do different types of projects designed to give them opportunity to serve and better their community. For the past five years the Avonmore Community Association has hosted the annual Community Days celebration. The group was organized in 1948 and has ten members on its board. According to Michael Sharek of the Community Association, everyone in the community is a member. Although the Community Day's celebration is only in its 5th year, the Harvest Jubilee that preceded the event ran annually for twenty years.

Kiski Valley Enterprises, Inc. will receive bids for the development of the Wilder Business Park project in Hyde Park until noon on September 23, 2002. The project includes approximately 5300 sq yards of asphalt paving, storm sewer, and roadway and utility installation. The bids will then be opened and read aloud at noon on the 23rd at One Parks Bend, Vandergrift. Once this phase in the project is completed, it may be as early as spring or early summer for the buildings to be constructed.

For those who have children having a safe place for them to play is very important. That's what a small group of people are trying to do for the children of Vandergrift. Brenda Snyder and Carol Torrence, both Vandergrift residents, are working very hard to make the Kennedy Park Playground safe and handicap accessible. They recently gained approval from the Vandergrift Council to keep the park open longer as long as they could get volunteers to help out. Currently Brenda and Carol are the only two parents volunteering at the playground.

The 14th Annual Tour de StongLand launched Saturday with off-road races at Roaring Run in Apollo. There were three different races covering a 17-mile, 9-˝ mile and a 6-mile course. The first race began by going a short distance down the Roaring Run trail before taking a fairly steep trail up the hill through the woods. In one area of the trial the bikes had to be carried because of the steep incline.

The state police responded to a vehicle accident on State Route 981 for a one-vehicle crash. Elizabeth Pepper of Latrobe was driving a 1990 Nissan when she lost control of the vehicle while exiting a curve and impacted a guide wire connected to a telephone pole. He sustained minor injuries.

About twenty years ago Linda Barbieri of Avonmore wasn't happy with her weight so she decided to join a gym and began lifting weights. She even joined some of the local bodybuilding competitions. A friend at the gym wanted to put together a bodybuilding show so Linda helped her do it. From there it just fell to her. That was nine years ago and she's been doing it ever since.

They were there to make a plea to have the park re-opened so they would have a place to skateboard other than the streets. This weekend the Vandergrift High School will be welcoming back alumni from the graduating class of 1952. The school has made some changes over the years and now utilized as the Vandergrift Elementary School. The building was a high school through 1962 until it became part of the Kiski Area. Over the years the Bell Township Historic Preservation Society has had some hard times dealing with the preservation of the church located on St. James Church Road, Salina. They were given the church in 1983 to restore and since then have had the corner stone and its contents stolen and then in 1996 a suspicious fire almost completely destroyed the building.
